5 Things Prospective Law Students Don’t Do, But Should

Today’s guest LSAT blog post is by Shawdi Vara, a former Blueprint LSAT Prep student who is currently attending UC-Davis Law School.

Here are the top five things I learned about applying to law school. Specifically, here are five things prospective law students don’t do, but absolutely should (there is some overlap between each, but that’s to be expected):

#1 Thing Prospective Law Students Don’t Do, But Should: Spend more time thinking about the law schools you would actually go to
So many of us just blanket apply. Don’t do that. Really think about what type of law you wanna do.

No Surprise: The ABA Votes to Keep the LSAT

Every few years, rumors start spreading about the ABA removing the LSAT from their requirements for all approved law schools. It starts as a whisper in a back alley, but it soon grows to a groundswell throughout the pre-law community.

The most recent rumor started when the ABA decided to revise its seven chapters of standards for law schools. That includes the chapter on the Standards and Rules of Procedure for Approval of Law Schools, which includes the requirement that all applicants take an admissions test.

And now that the final vote has finally come down, we see the rumors quashed, yet again.

The committee voted overwhelmingly to keep the LSAT requirement for approved law schools.

Graduating from Stress: The Progression of the Law Student Winter Break

The quality of one’s winter break in law school depends almost entirely on two factors: what year one is in law school, and one’s general disposition. I’m not sure how many of you reading this are prone to freak out, so I’ll focus on your place in law school instead.

Let’s take the 1L. I’m sure that, by now, everyone has told you how important your first semester grades are. They’re mostly right. If you’re a 1L, you get to spend winter break mentally rehashing every final you took and worrying about your performance on finals. Sounds fantastic, no? If you find yourself in this position, my advice is to get as far away as possible from law school/students during winter break. Find some semi-exotic locale and plant yourself firmly in a state of willful ignorance of your possibly impending doom. After all, there’s nothing you can do about at this point anyway, right? Logical Reasonings / 8.15.12

A) Apparently, diversity in law school is a good thing. Who would’ve guessed? National Law Journal. B) Speaking of diversity in law school: Someone uncovered an article written by Michelle Obama in 1988 in which she accused Harvard Law School … Read Entire Article…

How to Spend Your Final Days of Summer Before Law School

July is always an interesting time in the world of law school. Those who have recently graduated are nail-biting their ways through the home stretch of bar exam study. Those who have yet to begin law school are nail-biting their ways through days leading up the start of their 1L year. For those of you in the latter group, I’m here with some (hopefully) useful advice on what you ought and ought not to do before you plunge head first into the 1L abyss.

What You Ought to Do in Your Final Days of Summer Before Law School:

- Whatever the hell you want.

I mean it.

Where You’ll Be a Year From Now in Law School

For those of you who know you are going to law school in Fall 2012, this time next year will look and feel very different than it does now. Some of you are wondering where you’ll be accepted. Others of you are figuring out where you’re going to attend. Whichever type of stress you happen to be under at the moment, I can guarantee that it’ll be a completely different flavor of salsa next year (Confession: I didn’t want to use “ball of wax”).

Why the alteration? One word: grades. To be more specific, the grades that everyone will tell you are the most important of law school. 1L grades. Why are they so important? Firstly, this initial set of grades will play a major role in the type of employment you can expect to find in the summer between your 1L and 2L years (fair or not).

Law School and Social Life: Oil and Water?

If you’ve spent the past year reveling in senioritis or spending your days off from work doing nothing but drinking and sleeping, you officially suck. You are also in for a bit of shock to your system when you have to once again balance a serious class load with any interests you may have outside of said classes (you do have those right?).

What’s a budding 1L to do? Let’s examine some of your options:

1. Make friends with your colleagues.

While it’s not my preferred course of action, it’s certainly a viable one. You’ve got a ready-made group of similarly situated people right at your disposal. They are all afraid of their workloads. They are all afraid of their professors. They are all looking for someone to hold them tenderly.

The Second Year of Law School: Smaller Books, Smaller Hernia Chance

If you’re a 1L right now, finals are probably about two months away. This means a couple things. Firstly, you’re probably lamenting the fact that you didn’t start outlining sooner. But who can blame you? We all know that no one starts outlining until after the finale of The Bachelor. Secondly, you’re no doubt wondering what you can expect when you return for your 2L year.

For one, your classes will be completely different. Gone will be the days of the school cramming a predetermined schedule down your unsuspecting throat. Believe it or not, you’ll actually get to take classes of your choosing. If you’re anything like me, those classes will not meet on Fridays and none will meet before noon.
