Your LSAT and Law School Timelines (Should) Start Today
Today we have a guest post from Anna Ivey, founder of Ivey Consulting.
What’s the ideal LSAT timeline? Your mileage may vary, and your LSAT instructor will be able to give you advice customized to your individual situation. But in a perfect world, here’s how I like to work backwards from the end goal:
Plan to submit your law school applications in early November (or even sooner, but early November is plenty early). In order to maximize the time you have on your applications, and to let your brain focus on — and master — one thing at a time, that November law school application submission date means I like to see people take the LSAT the February before that.

Number of December LSAT Test Takers Dropped Again
The numbers are out, and a losing streak longer than even the Kansas City Chiefs managed this season continued: last December’s LSAT marked the ninth consecutive LSAT administration for which numbers were down from the previous year. 30,226 law school hopefuls took the 2012 December LSAT. That’s down 15.6% from December 2011 and down 40.1% from the December LSAT’s peak of 50,444 in 2009. All of this is largely because of bad press about the legal job market that newly minted lawyers have faced in the past few years.
The precipitous decline in LSAT test takers shows no signs of abating, at least in terms of percentages (there’ll be no percentages vs. numbers fallacies in this LSAT blog post). If you’re looking to go to law school, fewer people taking the LSAT correlates to fewer law school applicants.

Weighing Your Options: February LSAT or Wait Until 2014?
Today on the LSAT blog: a guest post by Law School Expert Ann Levine, the former director of admissions for two ABA-approved law schools and the author of The Law School Admission Game: Play Like an Expert and The Law School Decision Game: A Playbook for Prospective Lawyers.
With December LSAT scores less than a week old and the February LSAT right around the corner, a major question for many law school applicants is whether they should take the February LSAT or wait and apply in the fall 2014. While there are exceptions to every rule, taking the February LSAT is generally not a great idea if you hope to be admitted in fall 2013. To understand why, it’s important to consider the timing of the test and how it coincides with the law school admissions cycle.

Upon Closer Inspection: The 2012 December LSAT
If you took the 2012 December LSAT, you should have received your LSAT score after a long and painful holiday waiting period. For me, those few weeks consisted of ample beer, lots of movies, and very little work. I can only hope some of you fared so well.
So, what about the December LSAT itself? I seem to remember walking out of the LSAT testing center thinking that it had been a fairly straightforward LSAT. In general, I thought Reading Comprehension was easy, Logic Games were moderate, and Logical Reasoning was tricky. Friends of mine who took the December LSAT more or less agreed with me.
Let’s take a closer look at what really went down:
My first section on the 2012 December LSAT was Reading Comprehension.

Confidence in Your December LSAT Score Waning? No Sweat
The wait for an LSAT score can seem interminable. If you took the December LSAT, you’re in the thick of it right now. To make matters worse, your perception of your LSAT score may be sinking like a certain early-20th-century ocean liner, only without a soundtrack provided by Céline Dion. Losing confidence in your LSAT score is a perfectly normal, if disconcerting, phenomenon. Not unlike Miss Dion.
This all happens because you remember enough about the LSAT to sow doubt in your mind about your performance. On the other hand, it’s very hard to remember enough about the LSAT to reassure yourself about the answers to any LSAT questions. You’re also more likely to remember things about the harder questions, the ones you weren’t sure about, than about the easy ones.

The Clock is Ticking to Cancel Your December LSAT Score
If you took the December LSAT, there are probably a few questions you wish you could have back. You may be wondering whether you should cancel your LSAT score, and since tomorrow is the last day you can do so, it’s time to make up your mind.
First, let’s talk about how cancelling your LSAT score works. You can download the LSAT score cancellation form on LSAC’s website. Then, to cancel your LSAT score, you need to fill out and sign the form, then send it to LSAC by fax (if you’re sane) or overnight mail (if for some reason you like throwing money away). The form needs to be received by tomorrow.
Once you cancel your LSAT score, neither you nor law schools will know what your LSAT score would have been, but law schools will know that you canceled.

December 2012 LSAT Blog Carnival
If there’s one common feeling about the December LSAT that is floating around the internet, it is that the exam seemed easier than the October LSAT. It’s hard to tell if that really was the case, and contrary to popular belief, the LSAT curve will not be a clear indication.
Nonetheless, people have had plenty to say about the December LSAT. To see what I mean, check out the comments in our December LSAT Instant Recap and December LSAT Morning Cometh. But that’s not the only place where people are talking about the December LSAT.
Hop on the December 2012 LSAT Blog Carnival and let’s ride around the interwebs to check out the chatter:
