USMLE Step 1 covers content in the following areas: Anatomy, behavioral sciences, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, and interdisciplinary topics, such as nutrition, genetics, and aging. Test items require students to interpret material contained in vignettes, graphs and tables, identify mechanisms of action, diagnose symptoms, ascertain causes, and generally apply knowledge of science to clinical problems.
Though Step 1 is now a pass/fail exam, it’s still crucial you pass this test, and the knowledge you gain preparing for Step 1 lays the foundation for Step 2 CK success and your success as a practicing physician.
The USMLE Step 1 is a one-day exam that is administered over an 8-hour testing session. It is divided into seven 60-minute blocks and as per the USMLE website, "the number of questions per block on a given examination form will vary, but will not exceed 40. The total number of items on the overall examination form will not exceed 280."
